FRIENDS OF EARTH ENGAGED MEDIA ON TENUE AND BENEFIT SHARING

The Friends of Earth engaged the media concerning the ongoing tree Tenue and  benefit sharing.

Mr. Obed Owusu Addai from ( EcoCare Ghana)who lectured the Media emphasized that,
For a long time, laws within the country has not allowed the farmers to benefit from the tree they have natured on their lands. If the cocoa farmer live a tree on his or her land to mature to the level of harvest. The timber contractors will harvest the tree and the farmer will never benefited from the mature tree".

He said, the only benefit that the farmers will obtain is that .when the farmers crops are destroyed then they will compensate them for the destruction of the crops, but as for tree they will not get anything.

According to him, "we have realized that because of what the farmers are experiencing. The farmers are unwilling to live the trees on their farms. interestlly, the research made indicated that 50percent of deforestation in Ghana caused by agriculture. And underlined factor is that , because the  farmers are not  benefiting from the tree. They are also not allowing the trees on their farm".

" But now there is a reform within the sector to address all these problems. The Ministry Of Lands and Mineral Resources has accepted this recommendation and they are taking steps to address it".

Mr. Obed Owusu Addai concluded, "now the current regime is that, the benefit that will come from the off reserved areas. The 60percent of it will go to the farmers and the landowners. And 40 percent for forestry commission".
