WORLD TELECOMMUNICATIONS AND INFORMATION CELEBRATED

The World Telecommunications and Information Society Day was held at National Communication Authority had office in Accra.

Deputy minister of communication Hon. George  Andah read the speech on behalf of current Minister of communication Hon. Ursula Owusu Ekuful and said," this occasion helps to  raise awareness of the possibilities that the use of ICT can bring to societies and economies.

According to him, The World had experienced tremendous advancement in technology in recent years. We now talk of Big Data, cloud computing, high computing power, storage capacity, internet of Things (IoT), etc. These developments in the ICT industry have enabled the significant progress in Artificial Intelligence( AI). It is the new slogan in town.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU)  has thus chosen the theme,"Enabling the positive use of Artificial Intelligence for all" for this year's celebration."

" You may be well aware that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a highly complex technology that allows computers to function like the human brain. This technology has been successfully applied to societal problems and it has a great potential to promote social good in the future. It is interesting to note that two very successful consumer led business solutions Uber and AirBnB own no taxi or apartment themselves but through the use of AI, (app that gather intelligence on customers and how to provide solutions) they are to run successful business even in Ghana. Trotro is another exciting solution applying AI right at our doorstep and I can't wait to hear his story one more time."

The ITU is encouraging the membership of the Union to focus on the potential of Artificial Intelligence(AI) to accelerate the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. To be able to achieve this feat, the Government of Ghana must create the appropriate, desired and needed ecosystem for AI to thrive. In order to create a positive enabling environment for the use of Artificial intelligence in Ghana, priority must be to build solid ICT infrastructure so that AI can be developed and used seamlessly. Government has invested heavily in fibre infrastructure nationwide with complimentary private sector investment in providing redundancy and adequate capacity in the in-country fibre infrastructure to facilitate the provision of value added service for our people."

To further ensure that we enhance connectivity nationwide to support the AI ecosystem, the Regulator, NCA, authorized mobile Network Operators to deploy Universal Mobile Telecommunication System,UMTS, in the 2G band which is ensuring that unnerved and under -served areas of the country gain the needed access to data."

He said, "the installation of smart traffic lights with AI infused information will assist in determining the effective control and operations of the light during peak times, when there are road blocks, or accidents, etc. This will ensure efficient traffic management, road development and planning. Also in the area of education, AI can assist in some of the administrative activities such as making of assignments thereby enabling teachers to focus more on guiding the students. "
